Guide
How Type Out works, how your attempt is marked and how to set up Hindi typing.
Exam patterns
| Pattern | Time | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL – English | 10 minutes | 35 words per minute (1,750 key depressions) |
| SSC CHSL – Hindi | 10 minutes | 30 words per minute (1,500 key depressions) |
| SSC CGL – DEST | 15 minutes | 2,000 key depressions |
One word is counted as five key depressions, including spaces. The numbers follow recent SSC notices, but rules change: always read the notice for your exam, and use the Custom pattern or the error-limit setting to match it.
Exam simulation behaves like the SSC software: the passage is not highlighted and the test cannot be paused. Practice highlights the current word, marks wrong words as you go and lets you pause.
How marking works
When you finish, your text is lined up with the passage word by word. Each difference is a full or a half mistake.
| Mistake | Example | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| Missed word | “the cat sat” typed as “the sat” | Full |
| Extra word | “the cat” typed as “the big cat” | Full |
| Wrong word or spelling | “record” typed as “recrod” | Full |
| Spacing | “in the” typed as “inthe”, or “note book” for “notebook” | Half |
| Capital letters | “India” typed as “india” | Half |
| Punctuation | “however,” typed as “however” | Half |
| Word order | “very good” typed as “good very” | Half |
- Errors = full mistakes + (half mistakes ÷ 2).
- Error percentage = errors ÷ passage words you attempted × 100. Text after the last word you typed is not counted against you.
- Gross speed = (key depressions ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
- Net speed = (key depressions ÷ 5 − errors) ÷ minutes.
- KDPH = key depressions per hour.
- A word cut off when the time runs out is not counted as a mistake.
- You meet the standard when you reach the target key depressions in the time allowed and your error percentage is within the limit.
Keyboard shortcuts
These work while you are in the typing box or the passage. Screen reader users can read the passage with the usual reading keys at any time.
| Keys | What it does |
|---|---|
| Alt+Shift+N | Read the next few words of the passage |
| Alt+Shift+W | Read the current word |
| Alt+Shift+S | Spell the current word letter by letter |
| Alt+Shift+T | Say the time left |
| Alt+Shift+P | Say words typed and current speed |
Typing in Hindi
Hindi passages are in Unicode, the same text you see in Mangal or Nirmala UI fonts. Type them with a Hindi keyboard on your device:
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Hindi. Add the Hindi Traditional keyboard (InScript). Switch with Windows+Space.
- Remington (GAIL): install a Remington GAIL Unicode keyboard, such as the free Indic input tools published for government use, and choose it from the language bar.
- macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Hindi – InScript.
- Android and iPhone: add Hindi to your on-screen keyboard. An external keyboard gives a far more realistic test.
Practise on the layout you will choose in the exam.
Accessibility
Type Out aims to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. It works with the keyboard alone and with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack. You can change the theme, text size, spacing and typeface in Settings, and the reading aids let you hear the passage while you type.
